Whyville Outbreak Alert
The Whyville CDC reports outbreaks of possibly infectious diseases.

New reports of disease were reported on August 28, 2007. Unlike previous outbreaks of Why-Pox in Whyville, the subjects presented more than one set of symptoms. Some presented pervasive skin rash for more than a week, while others presented severe sneezing only. Yet other subjects presented a similar skin rash which only lasted one day. CDC scientists believe that there are multiple strains of viruses involved. The graph below keeps track of, day by day, how many citizens are suffering from each disease. Use the drop down menu to view the graph of each.

It is suspected but not confirmed that these new diseases are caused by virus strains that mutated from the Why-Pox virus of 2002 and 2003.

First case reported on Monday Aug 27.

What can you do? Whyvillians have been asked to support the CDC's work in three ways:

  1. Visit the newly established Outbreak Headquarters to contribute to the Case Files. If you or anyone you know has symptoms of Why-Pox you should post your information in the Case Files board. This will help the CDC track the virus and see how it spreads. Encourage all infected citizens to come and post! If they can't, you could interview them and post their details. After reading the Case Files board, we urge you to help us identify the disease vector, i.e. how the disease is spread from one person to the next.

  2. Visit the Why-Pox History section of the CDC. History teaches many lessons. We encourage both those who have experienced Why-Pox 2002 and those who haven't to review what happened in 2002 to see what clues past experience may offer.

  3. Visit the Why-Pox Lab and use the Infection Simulator to understand how diseases spread. Once you understand how it works, use the Epidemic Simulator to learn more about the dynamics of an epidemic. Your analysis will help us predict what might happen so that we may take steps to contain outbreaks in Whyville.

Whyville City Hall will be funding research and discussion at the CDC by awarding clams in salaries and bonuses. However, do NOT expect to see your clams immediately. Awards will be made to citizens according to their contribution, as determined by the CDC.
